I remember one time in college while I was taking a behavioral psych class, I conducted an experiment on myself to see if I could curb the bad habit. I wore a rubber band around my wrist and every time I caught myself picking, I'd pop myself. The problem is, if there was still skin to be picked (OMG that just sounds so gross), it didn't matter how many times I popped myself, I'd go right back to picking. Pop, pick, pop, pick...ouch, ouch, ouch. Experiment failed.
Adam tries to help remind me not to pick, and even Aidan and Logan have started to get on my case about it, but I just can't help it. So frustrating!
But at this point, I'm seriously fed up with it, and I'm ready to really try to put a stop to it once and for all. This time the experiment is to keep my nails painted as much as I can, because I noticed that I tend to do it less if I have nail polish on.
Look at the fact that my nails match my shoes! Not at my thumb...
Adam and the boys got me an ELF nail polish sampler pack for Christmas so I've been having a lot of fun trying out new shades, and over the past couple of weeks, I've noticed my thumbs looking better. I'm SO hoping that if I can get my fingers back to normal, I can break the cycle. Anyone who picks probably know that it's a vicious cycle.
Unfortunately, my polish only looks good for like 2 days max before it starts chipping, which is why I never really bothered with regular manicures before because it's a PITA to keep up with and it takes my nails forever to dry. Oh well, I'm hoping it'll be worth it :)
In the meantime, if anyone has any advice for how to stop, I'm all ears! And if you have any recommendations for a good nail polish base coat and/or top coat, I'd love to hear them, too.

Hi, thanks for stopping by my blog and becoming a new follower, I'm now following you too! I have no advice for ya but I do the same thing to, so your not alone!
ReplyDeleteThanks for following! And so glad I'm not alone in this habit :)
DeleteI'm the SAME way, you know! I've been painting my nails now for a month or so, and my nails are super long, and I'm not picking as much.
ReplyDeleteI also use coconut oil mixed with vitamin E oil at night, and that's helped a ton.
As for polishes, I really like ELF, and Sally Hanson Express Dry, or something like that. I use the SH topcoat and it dries, legit, in 45 seconds.
I hate Essie brushes because they are skinny, but the polish lasts a long time.
Hmmm, I may have to try out your coconut oil mixture and that SH topcoat. 45 seconds is awesome!
Deletemaybe splurge and go get one of the shellac manicures, they last far longer and might help! I'm not a picker but man chippy nail polish is one way to get me picking at my nails all day!
ReplyDeleteI've been tempted to do shellac before, but I fear it's a lot of upkeep and expense. How often do you have to get them touched up or redone or whatever?
DeleteI use Sally Hansen Vitamin E Cuticle Oil and ONLY push back my cuticles... I never snip or cut them. If there is a dry piece of skin I try to gently buff it away with a nail buffer. I really like Zoya nail polish, I just recently gave this line a try, and pretty much love it... you can read more about it here, if you'd like, http://mommainbloom.wordpress.com/2013/01/23/zoya-nail-polish-review/ Also, Orly also has a great base coat called Bonder and top coat called Won't Chip that work great, but I didn't use them when I used the Zoya polish. I also agree with Megan above^ in regards to the Essie nail polish being difficult to apply. Hope this helps! ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the base and top coat recs! And I've never tried Zoya polish before, I'm off to check out your review now :)
DeleteI am a recovering nail biter...I'll never be cured because from time to time still, I will bite the crap out of a nail or two. I never let myself destroy a whole "hand" of good nails...but it's a like a special treat for the mentally deranged part of me to rip off one or two once in awhile. My husband hates when I bite my nails near him so that helps.
ReplyDeleteHaha, one day at a time, right?! Glad you're in recovery :)
