Not a pumpkin picking post

I've talked up my love for farm fun many (many many) times, so it's no surprise that we made our way back to our favorite farm for their corn maze and other activities.

But we almost didn't make it. Between soccer on Saturdays, neighborhood picnics, rainy weekends, and our trip to Great Wolf Lodge at the beginning of the month, it was down to the wire--we went the Sunday before Halloween.

I had every intention of us picking pumpkins off the vine--something I was so mad we missed last year. But because we waited so long, it was really slim pickings. The pumpkins some people were coming back with were fugly. So after all my ranting last year, not only did we not pick our own pumpkins, we didn't get any at all. Total fail.

But that just left us more time to do all the fun farm activities they have. Top of this list, always: bouncing!

There was also sliding and riding (holy wow, that tractor ride went through part of the corn maze this year and bounced us around like crazy! I think my bruises might still be healing!).

Little brother hits big brother in the nards, then points and laughs. :)

We had hours of fun on a surprisingly warm fall day. I almost didn't even miss the pumpkins. Maybe the yummy kettlecorn distracted me. :)

Strawberries for days

Words fail me at the moment, so how about some pictures?

I've still got a huge backlog to go through and post, but we'll start with last month's strawberry picking adventures.

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

Let me just say that I think I've found my new Mother's Day weekend tradition. Like last year, we had another absolutely perfect morning picking strawberries and playing at the farm's fun park.

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

We picked two baskets FULL. I'm talking over 12 pounds of strawberries...whoa! Once we got them home and I had to clean them all, I realized we probably went a bit overboard, and thought they'd go bad before we could eat them all. Luckily I was able to freeze a few pounds, and made the most delicious quick strawberry jam. I've never made it before, but now I'm totally spoiled. I know how I want to use the frozen berries now, and I'm already looking forward to next year's haul.

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

Just when I thought we needed to stop because pickings were slim in field 1, they opened field 2 and we were the first ones over there.

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

Once our baskets were overflowing, we were ready to play! The best thing about the farm we go to is that they have family fun park. We could spend all day there. Bouncing...

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

Tractor-riding and um, hamster-wheeling? These huge pipe things were on tracks so we could race each other, which was pretty hilarious.

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

See sawing and pedal carting...

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

Duck racing...

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

And of course, feeding the animals. They gained a donkey and their goats have grown since last year. Awww!

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

We made some more great memories that day that I'll always cherish.

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

(Oh, and look at that. Clearly I found some words after all.)

Mother's Day happiness

My poor little blog has been so neglected lately. Things have been so crazy, and of course I've also been lazy in between (story of my life, ha!), but I've got so much to catch up on!

I'll start with Mother's Day since those are the most recent pics on my camera--and easiest to go through since I only took a few. Oops!

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

I had a really wonderful Mother's Day weekend. Quality family time, some fun, some relaxation, and lots of love.

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

A busy day of strawberry picking and pool time on Saturday led to some sleeping in--always VERY appreciated! Of course "sleeping in" is a relative term--on Sunday that meant Lorelai didn't wander into our bed until close to 7:30. The boys followed a little after 8am with homemade cards galore. Adam also surprised me with a generous spa gift card so I can go get spoiled with a massage and facial.

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

They each had written such sweet things about me and to me, I couldn't help but get teary from all the sweetness. And then I laughed when I saw that Aidan loves me because I pay for water so he can clean himself.

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

And Logan thinks I'm "prettier than a diamond" and would rather "have two of you than a diamond." {{cue the heart melting}}

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

We had a really low-key day, which was all I needed. Sure, I could have done without the grocery shopping, but we really needed food, so it was all good. :) That afternoon, we headed to the in-laws' place and had dinner with them and my mom.

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

As I was tucking Aidan, Logan and Lorelai into bed and thanking them for everything--the kind words, the sweet handmade cards, the snuggles, kisses, and love, and just for being in my life--I was brought to tears (three times in a row!) by how lucky I am. How truly blessed I feel as a mom, to have these special, wonderful, amazing children as my own. They're my whole world.

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

Oh, and I'm pretty dang grateful to my husband for helping me create them. :)

Spring Fever

The weather has finally been mostly nice lately, so I've got a bad case of spring fever. I wish it was the kind of fever that makes me want to clean...but in reality, it's the kind of fever that makes me want to spend all kinds of time outside. And um, doing anything except blogging, apparently.

Aidan and Logan are out on their 3-week (minus 2 snow makeup days) intersession from their year-round school, so I took last Friday off to just hang out with them. It was one of those perfect days where you're exhausted at the end of it, but smiling like a loon 'cause it was just that wonderful. Maybe my bar is low because we didn't do anything all that exciting, but it was crazy productive, and the best part was that it was quality time with them and only them--a rare thing these days.

After dropping Lorelai off at daycare, we started off the day bright and early with a trip to Target for some Starbucks and shopping. They browsed their stuff, indulged me while I browsed my stuff, we smelled candles for a riduculously long time and cracked jokes about the ones that smelled horrible.

Our next stop was Petco, at their request. Adam's not on board yet (um, at all) but the boys and I are really interested in fostering cats through the Independent Animal Rescue after talking to the representative for a long time. Seems like a good way to introduce the kids to the responsibility of having pets without the immediate life-long commitment. We'll see...

Anyway, then we hit up Michaels to browse and ended up with the makings for jewelry instead of the makings for a spring wreath like I'd intended, oh well! I like my two new pairs of earrings better. :)

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

Our last stop was Walmart, where we loaded up some other stuff we needed, as well as flowers and vegetable plants, because on a whim, we decided to plant a garden. It's been four years since we've had one (it didn't do so well the last time--basically never got watered since I was very pregnant with Lorelai that summer, oops!). The boys are really interested in helping, so it seemed like a perfect thing to do. We took turns hoeing the garden (but let's be real, I did most of it), potting plants and watering. Hopefully we'll have our very own strawberries, tomatoes and peas soon! And zucchini, if I can manage to find a plant.

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

To cap off our day and take a "break" from the gardening, we took a jog down to the neighborhood playground where the boys played for a while. On another whim, we decided to finally--after 11 years living in this neighborhood--walk the nature trail that winds along our neighborhood creek. I figured if I was going to do it at all, it'd have to be now, before the snakes all wake up to come "play" and the foliage fills in too much. It was such a great walk! Of course I had to grab a stick for protection just in case, because we all know how I feel about snakes...

We jogged (well they jogged--I did some HIIT sprinting/jogging, go me!) back home and played outside some more until Adam got home with Lorelai. At the end of the day, the boys and I were filthy and tired, but so proud of all we did, and the fun we had together. And bonus for me--I logged some serious calorie burn with all the activity, since I only sat down to drive and eat the entire day. And hoeing is seriously hard work. :)

Go 'Canes!

Thanks to a co-worker, we lucked into 5 free(!) tickets to see the Carolina Hurricanes hockey game last Monday. And they were great seats, too. Score!

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

We've taken the boys before so I knew they'd love the opportunity, but I wasn't sure about Lorelai. Especially since the game was at 7, and her bedtime is usually 7:45/8pm. I debated seeing if my mom could watch her, or just getting three tickets so Adam could take Aidan and Logan, but Adam insisted we take her, without hesitation. I'm so glad we did, because the whole thing kind of blew her mind. :)

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

All the people, the cheering, the ice on the middle of the floor inside...she loved it. She kept saying "whoa, they're skiing so fast! That's too tricky for me though." I told her they were skating, but she kept saying skiing, which was too cute. She also kept asking where the pig was, aka, Stormy the ice hog mascot. (BTW, I had to google Stormy because pig, really? What does that have to do with hockey? But yeah, ice hog. I get it now.)

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

Honestly, I don't know much about hockey at all. I know they skate (not ski!), I know that a puck is supposed to go in a net, and I know who to cheer for. But that's about it. Adam tried to explain icing to me at one point, but I couldn't repeat a word he said. Doesn't matter one bit though, because we all cheered on those 'Canes like we knew exactly what was going on, and had a blast doing it.

We left at the end of the second period because it was getting late for Lorelai and we wanted to beat the crowd. Unfortunately, they were losing 0-2 to the Bluejackets after 2 early goals within 17 seconds of each other, so it was kind of a bummer of a game at that point. In hind sight though, I so wish we had stayed. Apparently, the 'Canes had a major comeback and ended up scoring 3 goals in 3 minutes and won the game. How fun that would have been to see!

I think we've got some official "Caniacs" on our hands here.

{A Lazy Crazy Life}
Maybe we should invest in some Hurricanes gear so we fit in better next time though :)

What does love mean?

As I was cleaning up my (embarrassingly out of control) work inbox, I came across an old email forward about what love means to children. It inspired me to ask each of my kids "what does love mean?" so I took them each aside tonight and asked them the question separately, and their answers melted my heart:

Aidan, age 9: "Love is liking people in your family forever. It's liking people with all of your heart. (...It's so hard to describe!)"

Logan, age 7: "When you're in a family and you take care of each other. It's a feeling that makes you happy and grateful for your family because you never stop loving them."

Lorelai, age 3: "Ummmm....hugs and kisses! And Peaches!"

And to me? Love means my heart is bursting with joy because these four are in my life, and I would do anything for them.

{A Lazy Crazy Life} {A Lazy Crazy Life} {A Lazy Crazy Life} {A Lazy Crazy Life}

**********

And here's the email forward that inspired me, for your reading pleasure:

A group of professionals posed this question to a group of 4 to 8 year olds, 'What does love mean?' The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined. See what you think:

"When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore.. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love." ~Rebecca, age 8

"When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your name is safe in their mouth." ~Billy, age 4

"Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and they go out and smell each other." ~Karl, age 5

"Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs." ~Chrissy, age 6

"Love is what makes you smile when you're tired." ~Terri, age 4

"Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK." ~Danny, age 7

"Love is when you kiss all the time. Then when you get tired of kissing, you still want to be together and you talk more. My Mommy and Daddy are like that. They look gross when they kiss." ~Emily, age 8

"Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents
And listen." ~Bobby, age 7 (Wow!)

"If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate." ~Nikka, age 6 (we need a few million more Nikka's on this planet)

"Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it every day." ~Noelle, age 7

"Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well." ~Tommy, age 6

"During my piano recital, I was on a stage and I was scared. I looked at all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling.
He was the only one doing that. I wasn't scared anymore." ~Cindy, age 8

"My mommy loves me more than anybody. You don't see anyone else kissing me to sleep at night." ~Clare, age 6

"Love is when Mommy gives Daddy the best piece of chicken." ~Elaine, age 5

"Love is when Mommy sees Daddy smelly and sweaty and still says he is handsomer than Robert Redford." ~Chris, age 7

"Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day." ~Mary Ann, age 4

"I know my older sister loves me because she gives me all her old clothes and has to go out and buy new ones." ~Lauren, age 4

"When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you." ~Karen, age 7

"Love is when Mommy sees Daddy on the toilet and she doesn't think it's gross." ~Mark, age 6

"You really shouldn't say 'I love you' unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget." ~Jessica, age 8

And the final one:

The winner was a four year old child whose next door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman's yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there. When his Mother asked what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy said, "Nothing, I just helped him cry."

Fall Farm Fun

Let me just start off by saying that we have no pumpkin patch pictures for this year. We have pumpkins, but we did not pick them out as a family during a quintessential fall outing. Yes, I'm bitter. :) Especially after going through all of my old pictures from years past--we have gone to the pumpkin patch EVERY year except this year.

Aidan and Logan actually did go to a pumpkin patch on a field trip, so at least they weren't deprived of the experience. It's just me and Lorelai who were deprived. (Adam doesn't count since he wouldn't sign off on a trip this weekend to get pumpkins we didn't need just for the photos...party pooper! It's like he doesn't even know me and my obsessive need to take photos, ha!)

Aaaanyway...

We did end up having some other fall fun at a local farm during a work-sponsored family outing (aka, FREE!). Which is why, in Adam's mind, we didn't need another trip. Corn maze does not equal pumpkin patch, but after last year, it's a close second on my fall bucket list, so I guess I shouldn't be too bitter.

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

We made our way through the first section of the maze, and by that time, Lorelai was over it. She was actually over it by marker 2 out of 5...so she and I headed back to do some other activities while the boys raced their way through the rest of the maze.

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

We ended up at the bounce house, aka, Lorelai's happy place. Pretty sure she couldn't care less about the lack of pumpkins as long as she has a bouncy house to play in.

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

There were tractors to climb...

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

Rabbits to see...

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

Faces to get painted...(oh my, I can't tell you how much I LOVE that Lorelai was willing to get her face painted--she was very hesitant at first, but the end result was SO worth it. Beautiful! And she got compliments from pretty much every single person at her Great Grandma's nursing home that afternoon.)

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

And hay bales to climb, swings, cornhole, and other fun activities. Unfortunately, many activities were not included in the admission price, which I didn't love, but we made the most of of the free activities.

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

And we did get to go on a legit hay ride--with actual hay this year--so that was a win in my book.

{A Lazy Crazy Life}
That pumpkin we have is from a bin next to our food tent, compliments of the company event. No actual picking involved so it doesn't count.

Not pictured: the goats and cow. Why? Because Lorelai freaked the freak out as soon as she saw the cow and wouldn't go near the barnyard. She held onto me for dear life so hard that it was impossible for me to get any pictures of Aidan and Logan enjoying the animals.

The weather was not great--we had light rain for a bit which put a damper on some of our fun, but all in all, it was a nice fall family outing. We had so much fun in fact, that it was only as we were driving out of the parking lot passing by their pumpkin patch (which was oddly not near any of the other activities), that I realized I didn't have a single pumpkin picking picture.

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

But next year I'm already planning on going back to Phillip's Farm where we went last fall and then again in the spring for strawberries because I like their all-inclusive setup much better...plus you can pick pumpkins off the vine there. Pumpkins, people. Not a negotiable fall photo op! :)

Oh well...there's always next year. (Or tomorrow, if I can convince Adam that we NEED to go after school!)

{A Lazy Crazy Life}

PS: No husbands were yelled at in the making of this post. :)
